tree felling & dismantling
Felling is the process of cutting a tree near the base and using wedges or a winch to topple it accurately in one piece, to be cut into sections for removal once on the ground.
Medium and large sized trees that are dead, dangerous, or in confined spaces, should be sectionally dismantled to avoid injury and property damage. When a tree is dismantled the canopy, main branches and trunk, are taken down in sections. . . lowering the cut timber to the ground using ropes.
stump removal or grinding
After a felling or natural fall, the remaining tree stump is unsightly and can pose a serious trip hazard. Removal, as the name suggests, involves the use of heavy equipment to dig and then haul the entire stump and lateral roots from the ground by brute force, with the resulting hole back-filled to ground level.
A more subtle, and much less expensive solution is to use a powerful grinding tool that is able to reduce tree stumps below ground level, allowing immediate replanting or ground preparation for any purpose.
deadwood removal
Broken branches, especially those that exhibit dieback, decay or disease, should be shortened or removed immediately, before they pose a risk to people, buildings and property. Be aware that timber exhibiting signs of disease or infestation may need to be treated on site to prevent the spread of specific diseases and pests. If significant deadwood is present it may be viable to consider other management options, even felling.
crown thinning
'Thinning' primarily involves the removal of smaller branches (usually within the outer crown), to produce a uniform density of foliage. Crown thinning allows more light to pass through the tree, reduces wind resistance (the 'sail effect') and weight, whilst not altering the overall size or shape of the tree.
Crown thinning is almost always confined to broad-leaved species such Elm, Oak, Chestnut or Sycamore and is rarely a once-only treatment due to the high levels of secondary or 'epicormic' growth common to these species.
crown raising or lifting
This is the removal of the lowest branches to increasing ground light close to the tree, or to facilitate access under the crown. Crown lifting should be restricted so that the remaining crown is still at least two thirds of the total height of the tree.
crown reduction
Crown reduction is the most severe form of pruning and so is only used to reduce the weight of potentially dangerous limbs, re-balance a misshapen or storm damaged tree, or to remove obstruction and risk to property or overhead lines.
Whilst reduction leaves a smaller overall outline, not all species are suitable for this treatment and it should never be confused with 'topping', which is a crude, potentially harmful & indiscriminate treatment.

formative pruning
Immediately after planting, and for the first two years of growth, deciduous hedges should be pruned each winter and evergreens each spring, in order to control their eventual shape and form.
remedial pruning
When a hedge has been allowed to grow out of control it can take up to two years of careful husbandry to tame it and bring it back into useful shape (depending upon the species).
Hedges don't grow overnight and can be killed by overly aggressive pruning, so you must allow time for nature to take its course!
protecting our precious wildlife
Please be aware that, under the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981, it is an offence to intentionally damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird whilst it is being built, or is in use.

Felled or dismantled trees, pruned branches and heavy timbers are cut on-site, removed and split into logs before being seasoned in controlled storage for up to two years to ensure a low moisture content. This eco-friendly firewood is then delivered locally, providing a highly environmentally friendly, virtually zero-carbon fuel source at very affordable prices.
chipping
Just a Mow can turn large volumes of cleared brush, deadfall or pruned timber into valuable woodchip!
Chips can be then be removed for conversion into green bio-fuel, composted for several weeks on-site before being used as a mulch or soil improver, or applied immediately to footpaths and borders.
